Meaning

A deeply formative, emotionally charged memory treated as central to a person's identity, or, jokingly, any vivid flash of nostalgia. Most often met in the phrase 'core memory unlocked', said when something suddenly triggers such a memory, frequently with comic exaggeration. Informal, internet-native slang, entirely distinct from the older computing term for magnetic-core memory. Playful social-media register; frequently ironic when attached to something mundane. Regional use: General English; born in and strongest in online contexts.

Origin

In computing, core memory meant magnetic-core storage from the 1950s, and that technical ring is part of the joke. The identity-defining sense comes from Pixar's 2015 film Inside Out, in which gleaming 'core memories' power the heroine's personality. Know Your Meme traces meme usage to a 19 August 2019 Reddit post captioned 'A new core memory!', with spread on Twitter through 2020 and 2021. In late January 2022 a TikTok trend in which users posted or re-enacted precious moments labelled as core memories took the phrase mass-market; Bustle reported the hashtag nearing 600 million views by mid-February 2022. The 2024 sequel Inside Out 2 gave it another wave, and it is now used both sincerely and ironically for trivial nostalgia.
