Involving secrecy, intrigue and espionage, especially with a melodramatic or glamorous flavour borrowed from vintage spy fiction. It is almost always a modifier, as in 'cloak-and-dagger methods' or 'a cloak-and-dagger world'. Often half-ironic, mocking theatrical secrecy as much as describing real espionage. Origin
The anchor's translation chain is real but incomplete. Spanish Golden Age theatre had comedias de capa y espada ('cloak-and-sword comedies', associated with Lope de Vega), which the French rendered as de cape et d'epee and English writers translated as 'cloak and sword' - Lord Holland used 'Comedies of the Cloak and Sword' in his 1806 life of Lope de Vega. However, 'cloak and dagger' itself is documented in English print well before any 19th-century borrowing: The Phrase Finder cites a 1769 Derby Mercury letter about carrying 'a dagger under the cloak of patriotism', and Word Histories finds the first figurative pairing in The Examiner of 1811 ('a cloak for some dagger that you are carrying about you!'). The fixed modern form appears in Dickens's Barnaby Rudge (1841), where Mr Chester drawls 'With a cloak and dagger?', poking fun at stage melodrama and its props. Word Histories also rejects the popular fencing explanation (a cloak wrapped around the arm as a shield, per Hutton's 1892 Old Sword-Play) as folk etymology. In short, the 'cloak and sword' lineage is genuine and related, but 'cloak and dagger' grew from the cloak-conceals-dagger image, popularized through melodrama.
