The wording is ordinary English and will have been used literally countless times, but its life as a set phrase dates from 2021. Texas rapper Tay Money teased the hook of her track 'The Assignment' on TikTok on 16 August 2021 and released the song on 9 September 2021; Know Your Meme, which confirmed the entry that October, reports the sound was used in more than 640,000 TikToks within four months, typically over glow-ups, transformations, and skill showcases. From TikTok it jumped to Twitter and then into mainstream commentary through 2022. In July 2024, after President Biden withdrew from the race and endorsed Kamala Harris, her supporters revived the phrase in the form 'we understand the assignment' as a rallying hashtag.
