The phrase took off with a TikTok trend that began in May 2020, in which users filmed cinematic montages of ordinary moments as if starring in movies about their own lives; Know Your Meme traces the surge to a video posted on 11 May 2020 and notes that the very first such video is unknown. Merriam-Webster adds that the expression was probably shaped by main character syndrome, an early-2010s pejorative from role-playing games for players who dominate the action at others' expense, and possibly by big dick energy, a 2018 slang phrase for swaggering confidence. Spread from TikTok into general lifestyle and advertising copy followed within a few years.
