Meaning

A person who rebukes or lectures frankly, severely and at length, usually with the best of intentions. Nearly always found in the phrase to talk to someone like a Dutch uncle, that is, to give them a stern dressing-down; the expression is dated and rare outside older prose. Dated and literary in flavour; the severity implied is real but the intent is benevolent. Regional use: American English in origin; dated in all major varieties.

Origin

An Americanism of the early nineteenth century. The wordhistories blog's earliest citations are from the Boston Morning Post of 26 May 1834 ('I'll talk to you like a Dutch uncle'), the Poughkeepsie Journal of 20 May 1835 and the Flag of the Union of Tuscaloosa of 3 October 1835; Webster's dates the word to 1820-30. Why 'Dutch' was chosen is not established: the wordhistories author considers the underlying notion unclear, suggesting either an allusion to stereotyped Dutch (Calvinist) sternness or the pejorative use of 'Dutch' in compounds like 'Dutch courage' to signal something sham, and rejects the theory that it refers to a pretend (non-blood) relative. The phrase belongs to a larger cluster of unflattering 'Dutch' expressions in early American English.
