Meaning

A ticketed party held to raise money for an engaged couple's wedding. Current regional social-custom term Regional use: Canada, predominantly Ontario and especially rural communities.

Origin

An Ontario Canadianism distinct from an ordinary bachelor or bachelorette party because it is a joint fundraiser for the couple. Doe was added by analogy to stag, and DCHP documents the expression by 1986. Buck and doe is a chiefly Ontario synonym, while Jack and Jill is another established name in some communities; local practices and labels vary.
