Meaning

Chiefly British and informal: a basic, elementary mistake of the sort a careless schoolboy might make - Wiktionary glosses it simply as a fundamental, simple mistake, close to the American rookie mistake. A staple of football and cricket commentary and of newsroom self-criticism, it implies an error so elementary that a professional should be embarrassed by it. Standard in British sports commentary and journalism; the American equivalent is rookie mistake. Prefer schoolboy howler when evoking the comic exam-answer tradition rather than a professional's lapse. The phrase carries no malice toward actual schoolboys; the force is 'so basic a beginner would know better'. Regional use: Chiefly United Kingdom; also Commonwealth commentary use.

Origin

The elder of two sibling phrases. The OED's earliest evidence for schoolboy error is from 1858, in the Eclectic Medical Journal - beating its famous cousin schoolboy howler, whose earliest OED evidence is 1886, in the German journal of English studies Englische Studien. Howler, meaning a glaring blunder, made schoolboy howler the classic British form, the stock of comic collections of disastrous exam answers, and that phrase remains the more traditional label. Schoolboy error, by contrast, survived as the commentator's rebuke and now dominates in sport and journalism. One caveat: the OED's public factsheet records the 1858 date but not the quotation's wording, so whether that first citation carries the full idiomatic force - a blunder betraying inexperience rather than any error by an actual schoolboy - cannot be confirmed without a subscription.
