Meaning
To be left with an unwelcome responsibility that others have abandoned or passed on; to end up solely responsible for a problem or task while everyone else conveniently disappears. The British figurative phrase pictures a reluctant holder of a baby that is not theirs, as when an infant is literally handed to a stranger who is then deserted. Chiefly British. American English usually reaches for 'left holding the bag' for the same idea of being abandoned with a loss or blame; the two phrases are structural cousins, not regional forms of one idiom. Most often in the passive: 'be left holding the baby'. Regional use: British English.
Origin
A British phrase whose earliest known figurative uses, documented by Word Histories, come from the language of stock markets. It first appears in the North British Daily Mail of 28 September 1872 ('somebody must hold the baby') in a report on the Glasgow iron warrant market; the Glasgow Herald of 26 February 1875 explicitly labels it 'Stock Exchange phrase' in a report on rising rents ('the shrewder of the operators are getting out quietly, but, in Stock Exchange phrase, some will be left to hold the baby'); The Times of 20 December 1878 printed it in a Money Market letter on the City of Glasgow Bank collapse, matching the OED's recorded first citation of 1878 noted in prior research; and the Greenock Advertiser of 14 October 1879 shows it spreading to civic politics. The metaphor rests on the familiar literal scenario of an infant handed over and then abandoned. World Wide Words treats it as distinct from, though parallel to, the American 'left holding the bag', itself a mid-eighteenth-century British phrase that originally meant keeping someone occupied while you slipped away.
