Origin
The compound is older than its current vogue: the Oxford English Dictionary records earliest known use of 'hustle culture' in the 1970s, formed within English by compounding from the older verb 'hustle' (to work energetically, often ambitiously). However, the term only became widespread in the 2010s, when 24/7 connectivity, startup mythology and productivity influencers turned 'the grind' and 'rise and grind' into badges of identity. Around the late 2010s and early 2020s it also became a critiqued concept, with university commentary and mental-health writers describing burnout and the backlash variously labelled quiet quitting or slow living. The exact populariser is unknown; the spread tracks general social-media discourse rather than a single source, so any precise first-use claim beyond the OED's 1970s dating would be inference.
