Meaning

A sudden, complete change of conviction or purpose - a moment on the way somewhere ordinary when a person is converted to an entirely new view of the world. Almost always constructed as a road to Damascus moment or experience, and usually said of someone whose previous position was the opposite. The tone ranges from reverent to mocking depending on the writer's view of the conversion's sincerity; Damascene conversion is the slightly more formal variant. Regional use: General English; Biblical origin.

Origin

The source is Acts chapter 9: Saul of Tarsus, a persecutor of the early Christians, is travelling to Damascus with warrants for arrest when a blinding light throws him down and a voice asks, 'Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?' Blinded for three days, he is healed by Ananias of Damascus, baptized, and becomes Paul the apostle - in Acts' own chronology, only a few years after the crucifixion. The figurative phrase works even outside religious contexts, as Wikipedia notes, and the variant Damascene conversion circulates alongside it. Modern usage is relentless: politicians are described as on their own road to Damascus after policy reversals, Bryan Ferry called hearing hit after hit 'my Road to Damascus moment', and a 2025 Guardian obituary of Pope Francis described his exile years through the same image. A companion joke has the convert admit he 'got knocked off my donkey'.
