TikTok creator Olivia Maher (@liviemaher) posted the defining video in May 2023, showing a plate of bread, cheese, pickles, and grapes and saying she calls such a meal 'girl dinner', or alternatively a 'medieval peasant' dinner, riffing on another creator's post about medieval peasants' food. AP News notes the video drew more than 1.6 million views, and the hashtag multiplied through summer 2023, spawning restaurant-menu uses and eventually cookbooks. Maher is consistently credited in coverage from AP to Today as the coiner, though the concept of a snack-plate solo meal long predates the label.
